Cleaning and organizing are different jobs. Cleaning makes a room clean. Organizing decides what is in it, and decluttering is the part where you decide what stays. Most homes that feel permanently untidy do not need cleaning more often, they need somewhere for things to go.
Organizing and cleaning are usually booked together but they are not the same visit. Sorting and packing come first, then the move out clean once the rooms are empty. If the home is staying and only needs resetting, a deep clean after the organizing is what makes the difference obvious.
Decluttering is also the one job where the hard part is not the work. Deciding what goes is tiring in a way that cleaning never is, so a day is planned around the decisions rather than around the square footage, and we stop when you stop rather than pushing to finish a room.
The zone comes out. One closet, one kitchen, one room. Everything leaves it, because a cupboard sorted from the inside stays the same cupboard. The empty space is cleaned while it is empty, which is the only time it is easy.
Four piles, not two. Stays, goes, belongs somewhere else in the house, and undecided. The fourth pile is the one that makes the day possible: anything you cannot decide on goes into it and comes back at the end, when deciding is easier because the room has already changed.
Placement before putting back. What you use weekly goes at eye level and at arm's reach. What you use twice a year goes high or deep. Things used together are stored together. This is the part that decides whether the room is still tidy in a month.
Back in, and labeled. Containers only where they earn their place, and labels on anything that is not obvious at a glance, so the system survives other people in the household putting things away.
Packing, when it is a move. China and glass wrapped individually. Books in small boxes, since a big box of books cannot be lifted. Boxes labeled by room and by what is in them, not just by room. One box marked to open first, with what the first evening needs in it.
What leaves the house is yours to send where you want it. We sort it, box it and label it for donation, sale or trash, and it is left ready by the door. Taking it away is not ours, and neither is deciding what goes into it.
